Huskies in the hall. Page 4, Oct 13.

The pictures in “huskies in the hall” aren’t cropped tight enough. According to the Harrower book, “Cropping: Mug shots should fill the frame tightly – but not too tightly. Leave air above the hair, if you can. Avoid slicing into ears, foreheads or chins.” (pg. 50) The cropping in The Hatchet issue is clearly not tight enough. But besides that, all the horizontal stories are all right because, “Horizontal layouts flow left to right, the way readers naturally read. You’ll create the most attractive designs by keeping legs between 2 and 10 inches deep. Note how the headline covers the text and sits directly above the start of the story.”(pg. 49)

Homecoming Queen. Page 1, Nov 10.

The first obvious mistake is the headline. It shouldn’t be above the photo. According to Harrower, “When you mishandle the sequence of elements – in this case, putting the headline above the photo – you risk confusion. In news stories, the headline should touch the start of the story.” (pg. 55) But the rest of the page is totally fine, because 1. The headline covers all the text. 2. All elements align neatly with each other. 3. There’s at least all inch of text below the photo. 4. The entire story is shaped like a rectangle.

1. No prom, no problem- Not everyone wants to go to prom. Prom can be very stressful. It can be awkward and expensive, and planning is time-consuming.

2. It’s boring and rather ineffective

3. Prom might be an stressful, awkward, and expensive event. It is not for everyone.

4. It’s shorter and goes straight to the point.

1.Barbecue honors basketball teams- ASB held a lunchtime barbecue Feb. 23 to celebrate the advancement of both the boys and girls basketball teams to NCS.

2. The time isn’t really essential to the story.

3. A lunch barbecue was held to celebrate boys and girls basketball teams advancing to NCS.

4. It’s more stright to the point, less boring.

1. ASB raises money for Haiti with shirt sales- ASB is selling T-shirts to aid Haiti after the Jan. 12 earthquake. The fundraiser began Feb. 8 and all profits will go to the “Hope for Haiti” organization. More information can be found at hopeforhaiti.com.

2. Too much info in the lead. A little confusing.

3. ASB’s Haiti t-shirt sales’ profits will all go to the “Hope for Haiti” organization.

4. It doesn’t have useless infos like date.

1.  Service honored by Founder’s Day award- Library media technician Leslie DiFranco, library information specialist Kristen Marie, PTSA treasurer Francine Loudon and parents Katy and Paul Yamaguchi received honorary service awards at a PTSA meeting, Feb. 4.

2. Too many names listed, confusing.

3. Several librarians, PTSA officer, and parents awarded honorary service award.

4. I think it’s easier to understand.

This summary lead provides the following information:

Where: Fairfield

Why: The Shinkles are having difficulties to get an appraisal to validate their house’s price.

Feature Lead:

Feb 21. A6 Students tell of time adrift in life rafts, By Bradley Brooks

“A sudden, vertical blast of wind knocked the three-masted SV Concordia onto its side in 15 seconds, forcing the captain and four dozen students to abandon ship and ride out heavy seas for nearly two days before their rescue off Brazil’s Atlantic coast, the survivors said Saturday.”

This is a snapshot lead because it creates a picture of the setting in the reader’s mind.

“My favorite Hatchet picture”

“I hope that by the end of the year, my writing and photography skills will be improved and I’ll be able to capture my readers’ attention with my writing and photographs.” -“The Beginning, blog #1″

Journalism. Well I can’t believe I’m already half way through this school year already. It have been pretty fun, I guess. This class is WAY more work than I expected it would be. My work load for this class has been increased over the year, due to my position change in the paper. From a regular photographer, to a A&E music reviewer, a sports writer, to now a Photo Editor. Yes, Photo Editor, I felt honored to become the new editor for The hatchet.

I’ve learned and achieved quite a lot over the year though. I’ve had a few chances to prove to myself i actually do like writing. It’s fun! I’ve learned how to make a page. Also, Jenae and I got free tickets to see All Time Low at San Francisco and that was totally awesome. I’ve pulled a prank on Mr. Skillings and that was funny. But also as a karma, I’ve burned my tongue three times in a row, while attempting to drink hot chocolate on The Hatchet’s Christmas party.  I’ve also learned that Mr. Skilling’s boiler is extremely evil, and boils really hot water. I’ll never drink another hot drink in that class again.

The only thing i still have to work on is my photography skills. My pictures still looks like crap (sorry guys). Well I still have half a year, so lets work on that!

I though it was good because it is easy to read, and it has a picture of the person.

For the Hatchet, we can easily change the information and the mug shots on the graphic,

and make it into G.P.A. Hero or Sports Conqueror; shows the facts and pictures of

kids getting a high G.P.A. or who are great athletes.

Establishing Shot.

The end of the link crew meeting signals the beginning of Frosh Fun Day and the last day of summer.

Depth of Field. This picture has a depth of field of “f/6.3″ and zoom in 22mm, which creates a slightly blur but still  recognizable background.

“I love freshmen”- Janesh Gupta

Peak of Emotions.

Senior Jack Veronin slides down the slip and slide on Frosh Fun Day and tried to avoid soap getting in his eyes.

Panning. The face of Tyler Britton is face is relatively sharp, but the  background is blurred which gives the shot a feeling of movement and speed.

Rules of Thirds. Spencer in the blue shirt is in the intersection of 2 (imaginary) lines.

There were not enough seats for all seniors to sit at first assembly. Spencer Romero in blue shirt had to sit on the gym floor.

Repetition of Shapes. The cheerleaders were standing in the back were standing in a line with same posture, getting ready for the performance.

Cheerleader Ally Hamrow standing in formation, waiting for the performance to start.

Depth of Field. This picture has a depth of field of “f/5.6″ and zoom in 55mm, which creates a shallow depth of field and blurs the background.

Kellie Ishisaki swings the class of 2010 flag, and leads the cheering of the senior class.

Close-Up.

Video Casts: BNN9

This is the BNN online site of Mount Juliet High school.

http://www.mjhsbnn.com/index.php

I watched the September 30th issues of the BNN 9 news.

The first thing that grabbed my attention, was the intro (which they showed the school campus), and the BNN9 logo. There are a few things that i really liked about the BNN9 news. On the left lower corner of each video cast, there’s a small video for ASL translation. I though the ASL thingy was really thoughtful. Then the news started off with announcements, and goes on with weather, sports, music, national news (Obama and Olympic), then local news, and college news and more more. They had a HUGE range of news. Also the some locations which they filmed the news was really creative (e.g. the trunk of a mustang for the college news). At last, the BNN news has really good background music.

But also i though the news was somewhat boring, and too long. Also some of the news which is being filmed outdoor has crappy voice. Also somehow, all the club announcements are at the end of the news video, instead of at the beginning of it (with all the other school announcements).
